Every Once In a While…. 3/7/14

We like to investigate what politicians of both parties are doing to raise funds. We’re not talking here about bundling hundreds of thousands of dollars, or even about big time PACS, like that of Karl Rove or the Koch Brothers. We’re not even yet concerned … the key word there is “yet” … about how Tea Party challengers are trying to elbow aside conventional Republicans for not being conservative enough.

What we’re interested in this week is how the approach to you the Taxpayer is being made, and whether or not, as the saying goes, you can get any results you want from a poll depending on how you ask your questions.

Happily, into our eager hands this week came a “Survey of Taxpayer Opinions” mailed by “Senator” Jim Demint from the Heritage Foundation at 214 Massachusetts Avenue, NE, P.O. Box 97057, Washington, D.C. 20077-7315. Please note, the return address does not say “Former Senator” Jim Demint. Ideally he imagines he’s still in Congress, or perhaps even bigger than Congress, and that no one will know the difference.

The opening salvo is simple and direct; “Politicians and media “talking heads” proclaim endlessly that they represent the views of “the American people” when they advocate higher taxes, more spending, bigger government and a budgetary assault on the U.S. military. The Heritage Foundation wants you to have the opportunity to make your views clear, and have your opinions shape the national debate we’re leading over the most sensible, practical policies for America’s economy and national security.”

Knowing a little as we do about former Senator Demint and his leanings, and about the Heritage Foundation and its work in the past, we want here to focus only on a few of the leading questions with which survey takers are asked to agree or disagree.

The first “aha!” moment of the survey is this: “Think ‘big picture’ for a moment. Do you believe that, generally speaking, President Barack Obama and members of Congress can be trusted to do what’s right for America?”

Now, folks, if you didn’t vote thinking that the people for whom you voted had the country’s best interests at heart, would you have voted at all? Of course not. Then why is the Heritage Foundation undermining the very basis of our electoral system by suggesting we are led by untrustworthy men and women?

And here’s our favorite inquiry: “President Obama and liberals in Washington are dead set on fully reinstating the Death Tax – a leading cause of the termination of successful small businesses in America. Do you support or oppose the Death Tax?”

Put aside the falsehood stated clearly in the question. What small business man or woman is on the street because he or she had to pay non-existent death taxes on a business that on a good day brings in a hundred thousand dollars a year? So-called death taxes are paid by people or corporations that must pass along more than 5 million dollars at this time. Below that figure, your inheritance is untouchable.

Here’s another. “What about corporate welfare? Heritage is emphasizing the need to end taxpayer-funded corporate subsidies and bailouts that benefit CEOs and large corporations at the expense of families, seniors, and workers.” Name one, please, or even two that you, Heritage, would do away with.

Here’s a doozy: “Regrettably many politicians and special interests have poisoned the debate over Social Security and Medicare with claims that retirees’ benefits will be cut or eliminated if these programs are reformed. As you’ve followed this debate, have you seen or heard these “scare the seniors” tactics being used?” Isn’t this one, we ask?

If as the saying goes, you can fool half the people half the time, what is Heritage doing but trying to scare half the people, i.e., Republicans, into donating money for its ostensibly more sensible and patriotic purposes?

Do you think this approach will work?

You bet your sweet bippy it will, because most Americans neither read nor think. They’re perfectly happy to let the Heritage Foundation and others on both sides of the aisle do their thinking for them. Until it’s too late. And then, well, it’s too late.

  1. As a nation, we’ve survived the Know Nothings, the Secessionists, the Isolationists, the House Unamerican Activities Committee and more. The real question here is whether we can survive the coming irrelevancy of The Heritage Foundation. The hiring of former US Senator and current wackadoo Jim Demint as it’s leader may give us a clue to the answer.
